Anti-Choice counter protest – Sat 28th April

In response to The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children’s series of “kerbside vigils”, designed to support their aims to restrict the reproductive rights of women, which are set to take place across the country on Sat 28th April from 11am to 1pm, we are attending a Pro-choice counter demonstration to assert our rights over our own bodies and our access to free, safe, legal sexual health services and to free impartial and unbiased advice

SFPUC’s stance is anti-choice, anti-morning after pill and anti-gay marriage. As feminists we are pro-choice, we strongly believe women have a right to safe, legal and accessible reproductive health services including contraception, abortion and unbiased medically sound advice on sexual health matters. We oppose all attempts to remove women’s reproductive choices and control over their own bodies. It is with this, and this the growing anti-choice climate amongst some religious and conservative groups, in mind that we are attending this counter demonstration.

We will there, along with others from AWOL and Liverpool Antifascists to make sure our voices are heard.

Please join us at 10.45 outside Childwall Library – we will be bringing banners but feel free to bring any of your own.

Merseyside Women’s Movement would like to offer our support and solidarity to the Save Our Services campaign, please support this valuable cause if you can.

Liverpool Children’s Centres

As parents/carers of children who attend one if not more of Liverpool’s Children’s Centres we object to the proposals in relation to our centres.
We CANNOT accept a 53% cut to our services equating to £6.6 million. We know it will affect our services and the support that we receive from the centres. We are the 2nd most deprived city in the country but we are taking the BIGGEST cuts. We insist that you listen to our views and STOP these cuts now.

WHAT CAN YOU DO??
We have had an excellent response from parents in collecting signatures and gaining support and now the time comes to demonstrate our passion and commitment to SAVING OUR SERVICES.

There is a meeting of the Education and Children’s Services Select Committee at Liverpool Town Hall on Thursday 19th April 2012 at 5pm. We plan to meet outside to present our petition and protest against these cuts.
CHILDREN ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND, hence the decision to meet as oppose to march through town at rush hour. North West Tonight and the Echo are both covering this event, with more media coverage being sought!! As we all stand together to make our collective voices heard we can make the Council see that Every Child Matters.

Thanks to everyone who came to our International Women’s Day event on Saturday 10th March! Hope you all enjoyed yourselves!

A special thank-you to all the stallholders and speakers, as well as the Hope University Students who performed some drama, and the Rwandan women who danced for us, and the folk at St Bride’s for putting us up!

Louise did a fab job looking after the kids, and Carole and Briony were heroes in the kitchen feeding and watering us all. Cath did a great job making sure the march went well, and Chloe made us some fab posters and flyers. Val’s poetry night earlier in the week was an inspirational start to a busy week of events. Thanks also to Liverpool Friends of Palestine and the Socialist Singers for supporting us and belting out some tunes!

It’s so important that we have this event every year to remind the city that gender discrimination and gender-based violence have not gone away. Everyone who marched was standing up for women everywhere – well done!

International Women’s Day 2012 – March and Public Meeting

Around the world, women demonstrate to highlight the continuing discrimination, prejudice and violence that affects women globally. Add your voice by joining us on Saturday 10th March.

Annual Women’s Match Through Liverpool City Centre

We assemble at 12 noon in the Peace Gardens behind St George’s Hall

Speakers from 12.10 and we commence the march at 12.30

Public Meeting at St Bride’s Catharine St. L8 will start from approx 1.30pm

There will be a public meeting afterwards with speakers from activist groups such as the Liverpool Women’s Network, Migrant Artists Mutual Aid, Voice of Nations and Merseyside Women Against the Cuts. There will be time for discussion, as well as stalls from a variety of organisations, activities for children, live music and drama!

International Women’s Day is a global day of celebration and action for women across the world that has been held for over 100 years

Why should we organise for women’s rights in 2012?

Locally…

women in the UK still earn 15% less than men in like-for-like full time work
2 women die every week as a result of violence in the home or from a previous partner
women are more affected by rising unemployment with an increase in unemployment by 18% since the recession (men’s unemployment has risen by 1%)

Women’s Poetry Night

It’s that time of year again when we celebrate the creativity of both local women and htose worldwide with our annual women’s poetry night. Women are welcome to read a selection of thier own poems or those by other female poets! We hope to see you there!

The venue is on ground floor & is fully accessible ( it’s the big red building off Slater Street)
